There is a common misconception between what a sprain is and what a strain is. An injury to a ligament is a sprain. A tissue (ligament) that connects two or more bones at a joint. When one or more ligaments are stretched or torn is when a person suffers from a sprain. An ankle sprain is one of the most common sprains. But you can also sprain your wrist if you fall and try to catch yourself on your hands.
When you injure a muscle or tendon is when a strain happens. Fibrous cords of tissue (tendon) that connect each muscle to the bone. When you stretch or tear a tendon is when you have a strain. The most common kinds of strains are hamstring and back strains. Soccer, basketball, football, or wrestling can increase your risk to your back and legs. Gymnastics, rowing, or tennis are sports that can cause a hand or arm strain.

  • Inability to move the affected joint
  • Moderate to excruciating pain

Strain Symptoms

What Caused Your Sprain or Strain


Tripping, twisting or falling can force your joint out of its original placement or position. When this occurs, the ligaments near the joint can stretch or tear. Sprains can usually happen when you:
  • Twist your Ankle or Knee
  • Fall on the Side of your Foot
  • Land or Fall on your Wrist or Arm


When you twist or pull a tendon or muscle, a strain can occur. Strains can develop over days, weeks, or suddenly. Acute or sudden strains can be a result of:
  • Lifting heavy objects Improperly
  • Overstressing your muscles
  • From a recent injury
When causing your tendons or muscles to repeatedly move the same way, your strain can become chronic.

How To Prevent Future Sprains or Strains

  1. When in pain or tired Do Not exercise.
  2. Maintain strong muscles by eating a well-balanced diet.
  3. Try to have a healthy weight in reference to your height.
  4. Try not to fall or slip.
  5. We encourage you to exercise regularly.
  6. Make sure your shoes fit perfectly.
  7. Stretch and Warm-Up before exercise or playing sports.
  8. Try to run on surfaces that are flat.
  9. When playing sports, wear protective gear.
